How to Locate Cold Air Leaks in Your Home

October 17, 2019

Murphy Company Heating & Cooling understands how much energy can be lost in your home because of air leaks. Whether cold air is seeping in from exterior windows or coming in from the walls via an electrical outlet, there are things you can do to remedy the situation. Finding the air leaks is the first step to getting them resolved.

Hand Test

The skin on your hands is sensitive enough to find larger air leaks in your house. Since these can let in so much cold air, it’s important to find them. On a cold day when your home is being heated, run your hand along the edges of any windows and doors, especially those that open to the exterior. If there’s a leak, you should be able to feel the cold air entering your residence.

Candle Test

When you’re searching for smaller air leaks, a sensitive candle flame can be used to find them. For the best accuracy, turn off your central heating system when performing this test. Take a lit candle and move it slowly around baseboards, phone jacks, electrical outlets, and light fixtures. If you notice that the candle is flickering, it might indicate an air leak.

Hire a Professional

HVAC companies can find even smaller leaks in your home by depressurizing the interior using a blower fan. Once a house has been depressurized, the technicians can enter and find any small leaks that are coming out of electrical and gas appliances, air conditioners, air ducts, and various openings for plumbing fixtures.
