Going Ductless? What You Should Know

September 18, 2020

Mini-split AC units are ductless systems that cool a single room, so they can be ideal for certain households. It could be that you had a room added that your ducted AC won’t be able to reach. It could be that you need a shed or other outbuilding cooled. In that case, consider a mini-split. However, you should first weigh the pros and cons.

1. Cost of Installation

Mini-splits can be expensive to install, exceeding $2,000 when multiple units are installed. Though mini-splits can save you money, these savings will only be seen in the long term. So, for example, you’ll save money on your cooling bill because none of your air will be lost through duct leaks. Many mini-splits come with EnergyStar certification, too, which may make them eligible for rebates from any local utilities that sponsor them.

2. Flexibility of Installation

If you go ahead with the installation, though, you won’t have to compromise on your ideas of what makes a presentable exterior and interior. The two units of a mini-split, the outdoor condenser, and the indoor air handler can remain connected at a distance of 50 feet. You could cool a room that faces the street, then, and discreetly put the compressor in the backyard. The air handler can be hung on the wall or from the ceiling.

3. Zoning Capabilities

Your family members most likely have different comfort levels, so owning mini-splits will be to their advantage. You could connect up to four air handlers to a single compressor, and each air handler will have its own thermostat. You could even install smart thermostats for the ultimate in energy efficiency. The result is a zoning system without the need for ducts and dampers.
